The poor and the oil

Miracle in Milan (1951)

Directed by Vittorio De Sica this film stars Francesco Golisano, Emma Gramatica, Paolo Stoppa and Guglielmo Barnabo. In post war Italy an orphan that was found in a cabbage patch has grown up and helps run a shanty town for the poor.

There is plenty of Christian allegory in this story but it is not done in such a way as to beat you over the head with a theist agenda. The story covers classic neorealist subject matters such as poverty but has a Capra style fantasy level to it. It is really interesting to see the fusion of styles and the special effects hold up pretty well given the era and budget this film was made on.
