The Witch (2015)
Written and directed
by Robert Eggers this film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralp Ineson, Kate
Dickie and Harvey Scrimshaw. In the 1600s a family are exiled from
the plantation in New Hampshire but when they go to live in the woods
something evil menaces them.
Nothing is overly
original about this simple genre piece but it is really well crafted.
While the plot offers no deep insight into the nature of evil it does
manage to by pass a lot of the questionable usual genre conventions
about blaming sexuality. The direction is really good and Anya
Taylor-Joy is clearly an actress to watch for the future.
