How a franchise does fall

The Purge: Election Year (2016)

Written & directed by James DeMonaco this film stars Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell and Mykelti. On the night of the purge in an election year the protections against killing politicians are removed as one candidate campaigns to stop the purge.

In the West Wing television show one character posits “Everyone gets treated stupid in an election year”, this film leaves you thinking that everyone gets treated stupid by Election Year. The script is fairly weak, offering not much new to the franchise in terms of depth and has some suspect dialogue. Lurching from one action set piece to another there is not a lot holding this film together.
