Dignity during despair

12 Years a Slave (2013)

Directed by Steve McQueen this film based on a true story stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassenbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Lupita Nyongo'o. In 1841 a free man living in New York is kidnapped and sent to New Orleans to be a slave.

While this is not the first film to take such a realistic look at slavery it does a really good job, especially highlighting the use of religion to justify oppression. About the only complaint I have about this film is that maybe intentionally it fails to depict the passage of time very clearly, it would have really helped to show the passing of the seasons on the land a little more. I enjoyed the performances and the direction that really showed the struggles of the time.
