Be a good neighbour

They Rode West (1954)

Directed by Phil Karlson this cavalry western stars Robert Francis, Donna Reed, May Wynn and Philip Carey. A new medical officer at a cavalry out post falls out with with his fellow officers and men after taking a sympathetic view of the local Native Americans.

While the plot of this film attempts to take a more sympathetic view of the Native Americans in this film it is not exactly what you would call nuanced. Suggesting that you need to “win hearts and minds” is a fair idea but the Native Americans have good cause to be more than unhappy with their situation. There is not a lot of star power in this lightweight John Ford imitation and the film is fairly well shot even if the acting is a little ropey at times.
