One man and his dog

Umberto D. (1952)

Directed by Vittorio De Sica this film stars Carlo Battisti, Maria-Pia Casilio and Lina Gennari. An old man struggles in poverty with a land lady that wants rid of him and only a young maid that shows him any kindness.

This is one of the classic films on the neglect of old age with the title character suffering on as a burden to those around him. Unlike a lot of other films in the neorealist movement despite the seemingly sad end the film moves towards there is a hint of hope at the end. Using non actors and plenty of location shooting keeps the film grounded in the real world and this is a good watch.
