Odd Man Out (1947)
Directed by Carol Reed
this film based on the novel of the same name stars James Mason,
Kathleen Ryan and Denis O'Dea. Members of an IRA like group rob a
bank but things go wrong with one of the gang injured and on the run.
The plot of this film
takes a fairly even handed look at the terrorism of the period and
maybe for my money is a little too sympathetic to the point of view
of the republicans. What the film does well is keep a decent level of
tension and show plenty of different points of view so we get the
full spectrum of people trapped with in the conflict. Compared to The
Third Man (1949) this film lacks the stark film noir cinematography
but is still a really good watch.
