Going swimmingly

The Silent Enemy (1958)

Directed by William Fairchild this film based on real events stars Laurence Harvey, Dawn Adams and Sid James. During the Second World War divers based at Gibraltar try to keep Allied ships safe from mines and Italian divers based in neutral Spain.

While this film is based on real events there is an inevitable divergence from history at times and parts of the story have been “sexed up”. It is a bit of a shame that given the impressive real events that history was changed for the benefit of a more exciting film. Largely the film is well made and the underwater action sequences are pretty impressive and it is easy to see how they could have inspired the later Thunderball (1965).
