Sub Moby-Dick

The Bedford Incident (1965)

Based on the novel of the same name this film from director James B. Harris stars Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier. During the Cold War a journalist visits an American destroyer that is patrolling the Greenland coast for Russian subs.

As with many a naval story Moby-Dick provides a clear inspiration for this story about a captain with an obsession for his prey. The plot is fairly good, if pretty common for a number of similar Cold War films, but some of the special effects are slightly suspect and clearly models. When it comes to the cast it is worth keeping an eye out for early appearances from Donald Sutherland and Ed Bishop.
