Cold as ice

Frozen River (2008)

Written and directed by Courtney Hunt this independent film stars Melissa Leo and Misty Upham. A poor mother with two kids to raise struggles with money and gets involved helping a Native American woman smuggle people across the border.

Winter in Upstate New York provides a great scenic back drop for this low budget film with it's snow and below freezing temperatures. The plot of the film is fairly simple and is supposed to reflect the theme of motherhood as common across cultures which again seems fairly simplistic. One thing I did not like about the film was the tendency towards wobbly camera work for no god reason.
