Not top of the world

White Heat (1949)

Directed by Raoul Walsh this film stars James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O'Brien, Margaret Wycherly and Steve Cochran. The leader of a criminal gang goes to prison and gets an undercover police officer for a cellmate.

Despite this film having a huge reputation I found it to be one of the more average of it's genre. There is plenty of action and drama but this feels very much like a film of it's era, especially in Cagney's performance of his character's psychotic episodes. It could be that gangster films rarely do much for me but I found this film to be a disappointment for such a “classic”.
