War and Peace (1956)
Directed by King Vidor
this film based on the novel of the same name stars Audrey Hepburn,
Henry Fonda and Mel Ferrer. We follow the lives of Russian
aristocrats over a long period involving two French invasions of
Russia.
While this may be
called War and Peace the story is mostly peace as it focuses on the
various up and downs of the love lives of the various characters. The
plot has to condense the contents of the novel and really comes off a
bit as whining about aristocratic problems while the country burns
around them. At over three hours the film is a bit of a slog that
really could have done with focusing more on the war part for my
taste.
