Floating in Japan

Floating Clouds (1955)

Directed by Mikio Naruse this film based on the novel of the same name stars Hideko Takamine and Masayuki Moir. A young woman returns to Japan after WW2 trying to reconnect with the married man she had an affair with in French Indochina during the war.

This is a tragic tale of an on/off relationship between two people as they struggle in the conditions of post war Japan. Occasionally the plot is slightly melodramatic and the characters unsympathetic but the portrayal of post war Japan is excellent. There is plenty to enjoy even if like me you struggle to see what the protagonist sees in the womanising man she loves.
