Howl's Moving Castle
(2004)
Directed by Hayao
Miyazaki this film based on the novel of the same name has voice
acting in the English version from Emily Mortimer, Jean Simmons and
Christian Bale. A plain girl who works in a hat shop meets an emo
wizard then gets cursed by a witch.
It seems there are a
number of changes between the novel and the film and to be honest I
found the wizard character in particular to be fairly annoying as
well as not very deep. Where the film is at it's best is the fantasy,
semi Victorian setting but I wish as much care had been taken with
the plot as some elements come out of nowhere and are resolved in 5
minutes at the end. As always with Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli there
is some nice animation but nothing that stands out.
3/5
