The Lady Vanishes
(1938)
Directed by Alfred
Hitchcock this film based on the novel “The Wheel Spins” stars
Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. On a train journey in Europe
a young woman becomes convinced that an old woman has been kidnapped
even though no one else seems to remember her.
It takes a while for
the plot of this film to get going but when it does it is a decently
made thriller as you would expect from someone like Hitchcock. You
could see the plot of this film as an allegory for British
appeasement in the period leading up to WW2 although that may be a
little bit of a stretch. Mostly the film is well made even if it does
have a little obvious model work in the opening sequence and some of
the humour stops this being a really tense thriller.
