Sunrise: A Song of Two
Humans (1927)
Directed by F. W.
Muranu this silent film stars George O'Brien, Janet Gaynor and
Margaret Livingston. A woman from the city starts an affair with a
married farmer and tries to convince him to kill his wife so they can
be together.
The first third of
this film is excellent as the husband struggles between the
temptation of killing his wife and his love for her but after this I
found the plot became a lot weaker and more generic. It is slightly
disappointing that the story does not live up to the promise of the
first part but is still watchable through out. Where the film has
it's strength is in the expressionist direction which uses special
effects to great effect, particularly in the first third but also in
creating the city fantasy sequence.
