Howards End (1992)
Based on the novel of
the same name from E. M. Forster this Merchant Ivory production stars
Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter and Emma
Thompson. In Edwardian England after an old woman dies the ownership
of her house becomes a concern for three different families.
It is class warfare
with the usual reserved British nature as the central theme of this
film with the question of which class will become the dominant one in
Britain studied through the metaphor of who will inherit the property
that gives it's name to the film. This film has all the excellent
execution you would expect from a Merchant Ivory production although
this type of film may not be everyone's taste it works well even if
we are living in a world where class is becoming less and less of an
issue.
