The start of something beautiful?

Casablanca (1942)

Based on an unproduced play this iconic film is directed by Michael Curtiz and stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. An American bar owner in North Africa gets drawn into the second world war after running into an old flame.

For a script that had so many different writers involved with it this film comes together surprisingly well and despite skirting melodrama occasionally manages not to fall into sentimentality. There are some really great characters, especially the protagonist Rick, who no doubt keep people coming back to this film but it is also interesting to see how the film works as a metaphor for American policy leading up to their involvement in WW2. This film certainly holds up to modern viewing and it is easy to see why it is considered a classic.

5/5
